Education

This shared pathway is an innovative collaboration bringing together Oxford’s world-leading education research across a range of fields with Brunel’s specialist expertise in inclusive education and social mobility.

Each Oxford research student is a member of at least one of the Department’s 12 research groups/centres, each offering a rich programme of seminars and supporting research specialisms in a wide range of areas including the economics of education; vocational education and training policy; Educational Assessment; Fostering and Education; and English as a Medium of Instruction; Families, Early Learning and Literacy; Fostering and Education; and teacher education (see the Department's website for a full list).

Research at Brunel focuses on social inclusion and widening participation in a range of areas, including SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability), STEM education, Primary Education, Professional Education, Teacher Education and Pedagogical Philosophy. UK studies on the development of potential in children affected by social deprivation are led by the internationally-recognised Brunel Able Children’s Education Centre.

The Oxford 1+3.5 route draws on the well-established MSc Education (Research Design and Methodology) followed by the doctorate (DPhil):

Brunel and Oxford both offer +4 and +3.5 training routes. +4 study is for students who have completed a taught Master’s in Education or a related field, but who need further core and subject-specific research methods training. The +3.5 routes cater for students who have completed a Master’s degree meeting the 2022 ESRC Training Guidelines.

Oxford ESRC students have completed internships at UNESCO and worked with Oxford University Press, an educational NGO in Delhi, Oxford Policy Management and a range of UK primary and secondary schools. Brunel is developing internships with its Teaching School Alliance partners and the National Foundation for Educational Research.

Brunel benefits from connections across diverse sectors including the teaching profession, teacher training providers, charitable bodies, government departments and specialist think tanks. These include 33 participating UK schools in the Urban Scholars Programme, 9 local authorities, and the Education Endowment Foundation (Challenge the Gap programmes). International partnerships include Oxfam India, UNICEF and India’s Right to Education Forum.
