Who is this session for?
Are you a doctoral student planning to undertake a placement? Have you already completed one and are uncertain what comes next? Or are you simply interested in learning more about how your placement can positively impact funding applications or even career progression more broadly?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then this session is for you. We will discuss how short-term professional experience can contribute to your academic progression, especially in the context of early career (postdoctoral) funding applications.
Even though the session has been developed with ESRC-funded doctoral students in mind, postgraduate students across Social Sciences (broadly defined) are welcome to attend and contribute to the discussion.
What is this session about?
During the session we will address the following questions:
- What are the benefits of undertaking a placement?
- Why are academics increasingly expected to gain professional experience beyond their immediate academic environment?
- How do ESRC doctoral placements compare to schemes supported by other funders and at different career stages?
- How can short-term professional experience bolster academic funding applications?
- How transferrable are professional skills to academic contexts?
Speakers:
This session will be delivered by Dr Alexandru Martalogu, Research Impact Facilitator at the Social Sciences Division, University of Oxford. We will be joined by GUDTP alumni and postdoctoral researchers discussing how their professional experience beyond academia helped their academic progression. After the end of the session, GUDTP-funded students will have the opportunity to discuss their placement plans and any questions they might have with Katerina Vavaliou, ESRC GUDTP Research in Practice and Placements Coordinator, in an informal setting.
