UX Research

Modularity Grid is a deep tech startup, focused on decarbonizing and strengthening energy systems. We aim to accelerate the adoption of low carbon energy across grid-edge, off-grid, aerospace and automotive sectors.

Like us, you’re passionate about applying your ideas and skills within a team that is pushing the boundaries of next generation energy systems, with the end goal of tackling some of the most difficult interlinked global grand challenges of our time: climate change, energy and sustainability. 

You’ll focus on conducting in-depth studies using qualitative and quantitative social sciences research methodologies and techniques to thoroughly dissect and understand the problems, pains, needs, and behaviours of our users, while working closely with designers and engineers, to ensure that users’ needs are met in the optimal manner.

A varied role, typical Responsibilities include:

  • Quantitative and qualitative research and analysis, then communicating your findings to the team

  • Assisting in design of research materials including surveys, and making/recording observations

  • Champion the user, and inform design of customer-centric solutions that put the user experience first

Required

  • Currently studying a postgraduate degree in Social Sciences, User Experience Design, User Experience Research, Computer Science or Human Computer Interaction

  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal skills

  • Strong understanding of quantitative and qualitative social sciences research methodologies

  • Hands-on experience with formulating questions and managing interviews and focus groups

  • Knowledge of best practices relating to research ethics and data protection

  • Understanding of hypothesis testing, and proven experience with qualitative analysis, including preparing data for analysis, managing data, carrying out analysis, writing and critical reflection

  • Hands-on experience with conducting complex independent research and preparing technical reports 

  • Experience with tackling challenging research problems that are often not well defined

Preferred

  • Experience with UX design and / or data visualisation

  • Any peer reviewed academic publications 

  • Professional or academic experience with user research including contextual inquiry and usability study, and turning customer feedback into actionable findings

  • Prior hands-on experience with software for inferential statistical analysis of large datasets; ability to apply multivariate analyses and communicate statistical evidence through graphs, tables and text

 

Remuneration: London living wage £10.55/h

Environmental / Social Impact Assessment

You’ll conduct empirical research to help us maximise environmental / social and socio-economic impact. We’re a small team, so you'll have the chance to take on significant responsibility as you demonstrate and progress your skills as an environmental / social impact assessment professional.

This is a varied role, and your day-to-day responsibilities could include:

  • Conducting desk studies, including qualitative and quantitative risk assessments

  • Assisting in the design and undertaking data collection including surveys, detailed project site investigations and making/recording observations

  • Preparation of clear, well structured, logical and concise reports

  • Preparation of bids and tenders

  • Planning your workload so that you can deliver on time or ahead of target

  • Contributing to impact assessments, as well as developing technical reports and social impact strategy

 

Required

  • PhD / MS student with proven experience with planning and implementing complex research projects

  • Demonstrable experience with recruiting and negotiating access to research respondents; formulating questions and managing interviews and focus groups; sampling populations; recording observations

  • Understanding of hypothesis testing, and proven experience with qualitative analysis, including preparing data for analysis, managing data, carrying out analysis, writing and critical reflection

  • Knowledge of best practices relating to research ethics and data protection

  • Adaptability and versatility to work within a multidisciplinary context with rapidly changing priorities

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally

  • Demonstrate initiative and a creative approach to problem solving

  • Aptitude to work independently, but self-aware, knowing limits and when to seek guidance

  • Able to work effectively as part of a remote team

 

Preferred

  • PhD student in Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Geography, GIS, Economics, Biology

  • Prior hands-on experience with software for inferential statistical analysis of large datasets; ability to apply multivariate analyses and communicate statistical evidence through graphs, tables and text

  • Familiarity with approaches to longitudinal data analysis (e.g. repeated cross-sectional analysis; cohort analysis; panel modelling; duration analysis; dynamic models)

  • Experience of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software; and Photoshop
